We are already into the 4th quarter of 2018! As business owners, most of us are already thinking about what to do better or differently in 2019. Many business owners have already cultivated the habit of setting aside time for reflecting and visioning. At Broad Insights, we applaud and encourage proactive patterns like that, and we want to encourage you to consider adding another level of intentionality to your planning.
When we think about goal-setting, we often think it’s enough to just set aside time to do a little analysis and think about the future. What’s missing from that equation is an outside perspective. Clarity and power often come from being able to step back and look at your business and business trajectory with a fresh perspective. Of course, an outside perspective doesn’t draw from a deep personal knowledge of your organization like you do, but being able to examine your business from an emotionally unattached standpoint has tremendous value.
Schedule a Strategic Planning Event
That being said, we’re suggesting that one of the best things you can do for your business is to craft a strategic planning event with your team. What does that look like?
Sometime in November or December, take your team to an off-site location. Change up the environment and the usual schedule. Make it fun. Make it relaxing. Bring in an outside facilitator to moderate your planning sessions and to generate new ideas, new energy, and new conversations.
Here’s the thing: we all have blind spots, and we can all get overwhelmed with ongoing challenges, too comfortable with the current status quo, or just plain stuck. Finding a way to purposefully examine your business trajectory and set effective 2019 goals is the best way we can think of to help you round out 2018. Find your focus. What are your objectives for 2019? What needs to change for you to attain those objectives? How are you going to develop your employees? What needs to change in your financial structure? How will you discover new metrics or different solutions to operational issues that keep cropping up? Who is your next strategic hire?
