One exercise we do with some of our clients is to have them record how they spend their time. Analyzing your time can help you pinpoint patterns that don’t align with your priorities.
Before they record their time, we suggest to our clients that they should create a list of what they think their priorities should be:
- How do you think you should be spending your time in your current position?
- What are the top 10-or-so categories you should focus on?
- What percentage of your time should you spend in each of those categories?
Then we have them record their time. We instruct them to pause every 30 minutes or every hour and write down a quick summation of how they spent their last hour. We have them do this for about 1 to 2 weeks in order to get a good representation of how they typically spend their time.
At the end of 2 weeks, we sit down and make a comparison–here is what you said you should be doing, and this is what you are doing. This exercise can reveal a lot of surprising information.
Are your expectations aligned with reality? If not, what do you need to do to make sure that they are? Analyzing your time can help you get back on track with your goals and priorities.
